SAFe Release Train Engineer Exam Details

release train engineer exam details
The Release Train Engineer (RTE) plays a critical role in SAFe implementations by leading the Release Train and coaching Agile teams to deliver value. If you’re interested in becoming a Release Train Engineer, you’ll need to pass the SAFe  Release Train Engineer exam. Here’s what you need to know about the exam format, content, and prep tips.

Release Train Engineer Exam Format

The Release Train exam format is designed to comprehensively assess your knowledge of the RTE role and ability to apply SAFe principles.

The exam consists of 60 multiple-choice, single-select questions. Each question will have 4 answer options to choose from. Questions are randomly drawn from a bank of approved questions.

The exam is timed, with a total limit of 120 minutes allocated to complete the 60 questions. The countdown timer is displayed on the screen once the questions are presented. Questions must be completed within the 120-minute period.

When the timer expires, any unanswered questions will be automatically submitted and scored as incorrect. Candidates can choose to end the exam early by using the “Submit” button which stops the timer and submits the exam for scoring.

Scoring is based solely on the number of correctly answered questions. There are no partial credits – each question is either correct or incorrect.

The passing score is 79% of questions answered correctly. With 60 total questions, this equates to correctly answering at least 47 of the questions.

The exam is delivered via web-based format, using a standard web browser. Exam vouchers provide access to the online exam portal. The exam is a closed book with no outside materials, resources, or assistance allowed. Scratch paper and pencils may be permitted.

Candidates must complete the exam in a single, continuous session. Breaks are not allowed during the exam. All questions must be completed within the 120-minute time limit or the incomplete exam will be submitted for scoring.

Release Train Engineer Exam Content

The RTE exam covers a broad range of topics related to serving as a Release Train Engineer. Questions are organized into four major domains reflecting the knowledge areas required:

Exploring the RTE Role – 15-17% of questions

This domain covers the characteristics and responsibilities of an effective RTE. Questions test knowledge of RTE behaviors, facilitation styles, servant leadership, coaching techniques, and dynamics with the Release Management Team.

Applying SAFe Principles – 21-24% of questions

This domain evaluates understanding of core SAFe principles and the ability to apply them in real-world scenarios. Questions cover the Lean-Agile Mindset, SAFe values and principles, Core Values, Agile Manifesto, and more.

Executing the Program Increment – 27-29% of questions

This domain focuses on executing a successful Program Increment. Questions cover preparing and facilitating iteration planning, System and Solution Demos, Inspect & Adapt workshops, launching the PI, managing PI execution, and metrics for tracking PI progress.

Serving the Agile Release Train – 30-32% of questions

This domain assesses skills in servant leadership, coaching, and facilitating the ART to drive relentless improvement. Questions cover enabling key roles, fostering a one-team culture, facilitating events, value stream mapping, achieving Release on Demand, and applying systems thinking.

In each domain, candidates must know the terminology, concepts, practices, and principles covered in the Scaled Agile Framework and RTE course content. Higher-level questions may present scenarios requiring choosing appropriate responses based on contextual factors provided.

The exam incorporates concepts from the most current version of SAFe. However, foundational principles remain consistent. The unlimited practice exams closely match the content coverage, style, and level of difficulty of the actual Release Train Engineer exam questions.
